The Hats of 08

2008 was the year of the hats. it was all I could do later in the year, when the global crisis was taking shape. Some hats I loved so much, I repeated more than once... I gave most of them to "needy" heads. Lots of knitting from my stash. Alpaca stash, Noro stash. Lots of soft Malabrigo, and behold, my own handspun!

There are still a few days left, will I knit any more hats this year??????

I thought that a pumpkin hat should really be a beret since its shape is closer to a pumpkin; and sure enough, here's the pumpkin beret I whipped up for my little niece. I hope you like it and mostly that she does too :-)

I finished this a few weeks ago but forgot to post it here until now. :) This is the December Lights Tam from the Holiday issue of Interweave Knits. The yarn is mostly Knit Picks Palette, but I used Baby Ull for a couple of colors. Even though Baby Ull isn't 2-ply, it worked fine and the gauge was the same. I love the way this turned out!

Pure hand dyed merino baby hat, with a square construction and little amigurumi charms attached to the corners like tassels. The original was designed for my niece and I am now making a range of them with different themes and charms.

The W hat

I started this hat in 2006 then set it aside until a couple of weeks ago. :) This is the W hat, called that because there are little yellow W's in the blue section near the top, and because my first name starts with W.

This hat is an adaption of the bigger one found in a Swedish booklet with baby hat patterns from the 80-ies, which I purchased in a thrift shop as I did with odd balls of cotton yarn. The dark pink in this hat is however cotton yarn i batik dyed last summer. The previous hat was too big for my grand child (soon 10 months), but her sister fell in love with it and she also got the booklet, so I do not have the pattern any longer.

The pattern principle of my adaptation is simple: the amount of stiches are shareable with 8 stiches. Make your own swatch

16 rows dark pink

Next row, light pink: knit 3, drop the fourth st for six rows, pick up (with a crochet needle) the thread from the back to front through the st on the sixth row, knit it. Repeat these four stiches.

Now you can either change to dark pink or continue with light pink in 6 another rows.

Change colour, drop your fouth stich at the middle of the previous booble.

Knit as many sections of boobles as you think is enough.

The green top:

Knit 1 above the previous dropped st, slip 3 st, repeat

Next row knit 3 above the previous green, drop 1 st, repreat.

Knit one row green

Bind off every second row in between every second booble until 8 st remain.

Knit these 8 st for 1 inch, bind off.

At the request of my vegan sister-in-law, I came up with this Flapper-Style hat. It is crocheted from recycled cotton. The flower is acrylic and is detachable. The button is vintage from my stash.

new to me: chin strap! i love the look of plied handspun and wanted to capitalize on the beauty of it. it's also in garter stitch which i had never used for whole hats until recently when i made a whole series of garter stitch hats just to play around with it. also blogged here.

a tam-like construction with a little point. my favorite part of this hat is the contrasting yarns- the green is a nice sort of rough and the vareigated is soft. one of my favorite color combos ever.

Petite Flea hat

This is a hat I knitted and machine felted for Petite Flea (nicknamen for my daughter, 3 1/2 years).

She really didn't want to have this picture taken...

The hat is knitted in "förgarn" - an unspun yarn that I buy from Ullomera. It's a lovely yarn that comes i a great variety of coloring. Needles number 6. For this particular hat you need common needles, circular needle and dpn's.

I knit with double yarn usinge either one thread from the inside and one from the outside of the skein or simply one from each of two skeins. (Depends on how generous/rich I feel when I'm shopping the yarn!)

Oh, by the way, this is the first time I've tried to write down a pattern in english, so I appologize for any misstakes.
Come to think of it, it's the first time I've written any pattern down at all!

The crochet abbreviations I use is brittish standard which is supprisingly different from american standard. Look it up if you're unsure. I did.

The Hat
I started of with the earflaps by casting on 2 times 10 st on n:o 6 needles.
Rnd 1, 3, 5 etc knit
Rnd 2, 4, 6 etc purl
After the first two rounds I started increasing by one st on each side of the earflap on every second round.

When each flaps reaches 28 stitches (= 7 increases) bring on the circular needle.
Cast on 39 st (for the forehead), knit one earflap, cast on 27 st (for the neck), knit the secon earflap. Place a stitch marker on the needle to remember where you started.

Knit 26 - 34 rounds, dependeing on what size you want (I choose 27 rounds, but I wish I had done a few more).

Purl one round.

Start decreasing on st every 10th st on every second round. (This is where the stitch marker comes in handy.) When 40 - 50 st remain, start decreasing more often, about every 6th st.

Change to dpn's when the circular doesn't work any more.

When 10 st remain, pull the yarn through the remaining stitches and fasten off.

The "frilly edge" on the hat is maid like this:
Round1
With a crochet hook (size 4-5) fasten the yarn in the purled round with a sc. Crochet *3 chain st, skip one purl st, 2sc in the next two purled st* and finish with 1sc beside the first one.

Round 2
1 sc in the Rnd ones 1st sc.
*Into the arch work 1sc, 3 dc, 1 picot on top of the 3rd dc(*3ch, sl st into 3rd ch from hook*) 2dc, 1sc. 1sc into each of last rounds sc.*1sc in Rnd ones last sc.
Fasten off.

Braid
With number 6 dpn, pick up four st in the edge of the earflap.
knit an I-cord about 60 cm long.
Pull the yarn through and fasten. Tie a knot at the end of the cord.
Do the same on the other earflap.

Finish
by crocheting 1rnd around the edge of the hat.

Throw the hat in the washing machine with a pair of jeans or a bathroom rug. 40 C. (I put my hat in one of those little bags you put lingerie in when you wash them. I hear other uses pillow cases.)

Form the hat over a bowl in the size of your childs head or - if you're able to catch her - over the head of the child itself.
When you're satisfied with the form you can decorate it if you want to.

Flower
The flower on the top of the hat i formed by two crocheted strings of yarn. One in pink for the petals and one in lilac for the middle.

The string is pinned in shape on the hat and then needlefelted there.

(To make the hat yet a little bit warmer around the forehead, I also needlefelted on some wool on the inside of the hat. )

The Minnesota Warrior ( crochet)

Some great hats here ! I am a little intimidated but honored to be among such talent! The Minnesota Warror hat is nothing fancy. I was just trying to come up with a pattern for a future hat made with some "hairy" yarn that I won't be able to rip if I dont get it right the first time. Now to find the time to work that hat ! I am just so excited to have something to add. I usually don't have time to make challenge items by the deadline of a challenge so THANK YOU for the hat play group project that I can play!
This is a easy pattern to make. I just worked the rib stitch in rows until the piece was long enough to go around my head with a turned up edge. Then I joined beginning chain row to the end row to make it a tube. Then, I attached the yarn to make the top of the hat and worked in single crochet rounds, decreasing as I worked. I then pulled the end shut and finished off. I also added a single crochet edge to finish the turn up. That's all there is to it. Yarn was just a cheapy synthetic, I dont remember the Brand but I it might have been Red Heart.

Diakeito yarn in a Noro Pattern

This is an old Noro pattern in a Diakeito yarn. you knit on a bias and alternate every few rows reverse stockinet stitch. after desired length, you do a 3 needle bind of (or graft if you want. I did not) you get a tube. you tie one end and fold over the other. I also did one row of single crochet just to finish the fold over edge. tada! its was written for kureyon. works well with silk garden as well.

Knit with Noro Kureyon. Mitered sq band. Join when it is just a bit tight around your head. Turn it inside out. PU stitches around band in the round. Knit for 6-7 inches. Do your favorite decreases. flip band to the front. tada!

Ingrid's crazy hats

I am extremely happy with this one :-) it was my first modular hat and the top is more or less freeform, I just cast on and made some triangles. And it used left over sock yarn - since I knit so many socks I drown in leftovers, and I keep collecting them.

To close the top just use 'ordinary' modules ie square ones, if you don't feel comfortable with freeform triangles :-)

When I learnt this module I sat there just smiling it was such a brilliant idea with shells and colours and using leftover yarn. I just love module knitting when it is done with colours and shapes!

Bohus Swan hat

I finished this hat a couple of weeks ago. It's taken from the book Poems of Color, which is all about Bohus knitting. It's interesting to knit because there are three contrast colors and the fairisle is in knit and purl.
I shopped my stash and used as the main yarn a doubled coned lambswool yarn in oil and as the contrast colors three coned Shetland yarns in oil. The yarns are not exactly the same thickness. The hat had to be washed after finishing to soften up the yarn.
I have knitted a matching sweater in the same yarns a year ago.

i've really been interested in exploring the possibilities of both earflaps and square hats lately. this particular manifestation was made from 3 similar neon green wools that i handspun, toned down by the olive. i wasn't sure if those little balls of handspun would ever find a home!

Fast knitted slip stich hat

Rib: url 1 colour A (black), knit 1 colour B (rainbow)

Slip stiches after the rib:

Row 1: Colour A, knit
Row 2: Colour B: *knit 3, slip 1*, repeat
Row 3: Colour B: *purl 3, slip 1*, repeat
Row 4: Colour A, knit
Repeat rows 1-4 until you want to decrease.

Decrease on a Colour A row: *knit 1, knit 2 tog, knit 1*, repeat
Continue two repeats o A & B with just two stiches between the slip stiches on a B row.
Decrease next time too on a Colour A row *knit 2 tog, knit 1*, repeat
Continue two repeats o A & B with just one stich between the slip stiches on a B row.
Now you are left with just colour A.
Decrease as you like.
